    OFFICIAL RELEASE: 21st July

The first Funkamental release is Sonic Fiction, the only album by Spaceboys, initially released on CD back in 2003 described as an interplanetary never-ending jam session between Sun Ra and Fela Kuti, materialized by the hands of Francisco Rebelo, João Gomes and Tiago Santos who first assembled as Cool Hipnoise in 1995 a prolific band recording a string of albums, singles and EPs revolving around Funk, Acid Jazz, Jazz Funk and Dub for the best part of ten years.

about

This first album, back in 2003, meant a giant leap for Spaceboys but a tiny step for a country still tuning a blind eye to many of their references and not that much into these cosmic adventures. These were the times of “Lisboa, não se passa nada!” (“Lisbon, there’s nothing going on!”) the words that morphed the dance-facing “Moonshrine” with Kalaf’s voice into a spacey afro funk manifesto clashing with their own reality then and there.
Well received by music journalists and critics, getting support from DJs home and abroad, “Sonic Fiction” didn’t take off to the projected mission of taking the first electro-afro-funk portuguese trio into earthlings’ homes and for a long time it has just been left afloat in space, like an unidentified object abandoned like an old and faulty satellite with no detectable signal.
The years passed and what we thought to be lost forever, gained momentum again by means of the intertwined connections of music and its evolutive steps, turning the underground “Sonic Fiction” into an album where electronica tells stories about planets flirting with each other, following shooting stars, cruising side-by-side with the Resistance and cosmic girls in afrofuturist clubs on the Moon and the space, atop broken beat, downtempo and house, today getting closer to easy listening, funk and psychedelia for the 21st century.

Looking backwards, a future dreamt of almost twenty years ago happening today with this double LP reissue placing Spaceboys in the original path of their first space mission: to travel through all the funk galaxy, heading towards the stars they still recognize at thousands of light-years, a place where they can hug Sun Ra and Fela Kuti together in a bright eternal jam session, shining forever side by side in their minds.

When a record collection starts to grow, some blind spots become very noticeable: records too hard to find, upcoming artists with music so good it deserves a nice record or old releases that have never been pressed to vinyl. Yet.
